The Khanate of Kazan
The first significant Tatar khanate to form out of the remnants of the Golden Horde was the Khanate of Kazan in 1445. Kazan is today the key cultural home of the Tatars on the Volga River in the Russian republic of Tatarstan, and it is believed that Kazan was founded several centuries earlier, in around 1000 CE, possibly by traders. The city provides a handy position for both water and food supplies, on the Volga River, and as a trading point. It is accessible to both Scandinavia, into Central Asia and even as far south as the Middle East. Although its name is disputed, it is believed that the name Kazan is derived from the Turkic word for cooking pot, although the precise founders of the settlement, whether Volga Bulgarians or others, are not known for certain.
